Start-up FAQs

To assess viability

8 start-up questions

The questions church leaders ask first, answered plainly.

What is the legal commitment of the church?

Intellectual Property & Affiliation. Every new Swamp Corps host must enter into an Intellectual Property Licensing Agreement. This agreement grants the church or host organization permission to use Swamp Corps’ curriculum, methods, and brand standards while protecting cultural integrity.

Key points

  • Two affiliation pathways are available: Partnership Affiliation or Independent Affiliation.
  • The agreement ensures mission alignment, safety standards, and long-term sustainability.
  • A sample licensing template is available upon request.

What is the financial commitment of the church?

By the conclusion of Year 3, the camp should be financially self-sustaining under the leadership of the host church or organization.

Key points

  • Camp expenses are covered through registration fees and/or local support.
  • Financial sustainability is strongly encouraged before or by the end of Year 3.
  • Early financial clarity increases long-term stability.

What risks come with camping?

Camping, by nature, includes physical and relational risks. Our objective is to reduce those risks to a level comparable to a camper’s own home through structured training and clear safety standards.

  • Physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being emphasized.
  • Ongoing review and improvement of safety protocols.

Refer to our Safe Camp Policies for full details.

Key points

  • Local legal requirements
  • Cultural considerations
  • Transportation logistics
  • Facility safety standards
  • Alignment with the 7-Step Start-Up Process

Host leadership provides essential local insight during the Discovery phase.

Safety is non-negotiable. Swamp Corps operates under strict child protection policies and zero-tolerance standards.

Key points

  • Rule of Three (no one-on-one isolation).
  • Background checks and screening where applicable.
  • Trained staff in abuse detection and mandated reporting.
  • Clearly defined supervision and housing standards.

Refer to Safe Camp Policies for full details.

What proportion of the financial responsibility rests with the parents?

Camp fees are primarily covered by participating families, as this reinforces commitment and sustainability.

Key points

  • Fees include transportation, lodging, meals, programming, and staffing.
  • If families face hardship, churches are encouraged to explore scholarship or fundraising solutions.
  • Swamp Corps can provide examples of successful fundraising strategies.

How many personnel will be needed from our team?

Personnel needs vary by camp size, but staffing ratios are clearly defined to ensure safety and effectiveness.

Key points

  • Recommended counselor-to-camper ratio: 1:5 or 1:7.
  • Optimal team size: 10–14 campers per group.
  • Swamp Corps assigns trained counselors during the 3-year training phase.
  • Host counselors are developed over time to ensure independent sustainability.
  • 4–8 adult volunteers typically support operational functions.

What is the scope of the camp in our local area?

Swamp Camps typically serve churches within a reasonable travel radius of the camp location.

Key points

  • Most camps welcome participation from multiple churches.
  • Some campers may travel long distances voluntarily.
  • Local leadership determines scope and outreach strategy.
  • Camps are viewed as a long-term investment in the next generation.

A concluding thought

The responsibility for this endeavor rests with your church or churches in your area, any potential investors, and those committed to perpetuating the Christian heritage while engaging and empowering the younger generation.
